Spending more and providing less are very general terms. Do you mean that less people have access to healthcare? Your ability to spend as much as you like on your health care is a sign of freedom. If you take away the ability to freely spend money on health care, then you are taking away our freedom.
We spend more overall because the supply of healthcare in this country is heavily regulated by the AMA (a labor union), and the government. The government also heavily regulates the health insurance industry, and industry whose job is NOT to provide actual healthcare to people.
The health care bill that just passed in the house is a direct attack on the health insurance industry, whereby the government will set prices and determine who the companies have to accept. This completely eliminates the profit incentive to pool risk, and the insurance companies will likely cease to exist, resulting in a government takeover of health care known as socialized medicine.
As long as there is no free market for health insurance (why can't I buy interstate health insurance?), and we allow the AMA to limit the supply of doctors, the cost of health care and insurance in this country will continue to remain too high. If you deregulate the entire industry (abolish the FDA & limit the AMA), then competition will abound, prices will drop, and more people will have access to affordable health care and affordable insurance.
This health care bill will cause us to spend a great deal MORE than we do overall right now and it will provide LESS care in the long run. Don't let our congress (continue to) bankrupt America.
